FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short and honest. If something's missing, write to us.

01

What if a thermal receipt fades or a slip goes missing?

Photograph the receipt the moment you have it — ten seconds. Quitto stores it unchangeable and readable forever. Faded thermal paper or a slip lost in a jacket pocket then costs you nothing — and no deductible expense slips away.

02

What does the tax office see in an audit?

Every original receipt unchanged, plus a complete history of every edit — a GoBD-compliant capture with timestamps and a change log. You hand over a traceable package and explain nothing. Certified, audit-proof long-term archival is your tax advisor's job — Quitto delivers the clean basis for it.

03

I did nothing all year — does Quitto still help?

Yes. Grab the shoebox and photograph the receipts one after another. Quitto recognises and sorts them automatically. The pile becomes your finished Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung in one go.

04

I don't know much about tax — is Quitto enough?

For the simple Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung (EÜR) that most self-employed people file: yes. Quitto sorts every receipt into the right category and builds the overview at the end. Your tax advisor does the rest with the finished package — or you do.

05

What does Quitto cost?

Three receipts are free — fully usable, no watermark, no time limit. After that Quitto costs €2.99 a month, €24.99 a year or €49.99 as a one-time purchase. Nothing hidden, no extra purchases on top.

06

Why is there a one-time purchase?

Because not everyone wants to rent. Other tax tools cost €150–300 every year, over and over. With Quitto you pay €49.99 once — no subscription, no recurring charge. Or take the monthly or yearly plan if you prefer. You decide: rent or buy once.

07

Can my tax advisor work with it?

Yes. Quitto creates a file in the DATEV format that practically every German tax advisor uses, plus a spreadsheet (works with WISO Steuer too) and all receipts sorted — together as one package. Your tax advisor gets everything in one go, no follow-up questions.

08

Does Quitto handle electronic invoices?

Yes. Today's common electronic invoices — the industry terms are XRechnung and ZUGFeRD — are read in automatically. Invoice number, date, amounts and tax land in the app with no retyping.

09

Which export formats are there?

You pick what you need: CSV (semicolon-separated, WISO-Steuer-compatible), DATEV for your tax advisor, a PDF receipt archive (all receipts sorted by month in one file), or the tax-advisor package as a ZIP with everything together plus an EÜR summary and Anlage-EÜR line numbers. Plus an encrypted full backup any time, to take with you.

10

Can I record receipts in a foreign currency?

Yes. Record a receipt in USD, GBP, CHF etc. and Quitto converts to euros automatically — at the official European Central Bank rate for the receipt date (the rate accepted for German tax). You can override it if your card settled differently. The receipt shows both: "49.99 USD → 46.12 EUR (rate 0.9226)". The euro amount is what counts for the tax office.

11

Can I see how I'm doing during the year?

Yes — Quitto isn't only for tax. The dashboard shows income, expenses and profit any time: current month, full year, broken down by category, with a monthly bar chart. You always know where you stand — not just in April.

12

Can I add my own categories?

Yes. Quitto ships with built-in EÜR categories for expenses and income (office supplies, travel, software, hospitality, fees …), each mapped to the right Anlage-EÜR line. You can add your own categories freely.

13

I'm a small business under §19 — do I need the VAT fields?

No. Just turn "show VAT" off — then no tax fields appear at all, zero complexity. If you're VAT-registered, turn it on: gross, net and VAT rate per receipt, and the export gets the matching columns. Quitto does no VAT pre-returns — just clean capture.

14

Does Quitto run on iPad and Mac?

Yes. Quitto is a native app for iPhone, iPad and Mac — not a blown-up iPhone app, but designed per device: on iPad with list-left, detail-right (Split View), on Mac with drag & drop. Light and dark mode included. Through your own iCloud all three stay in sync: scan on iPhone, export on Mac.

15

Do I have to photograph every receipt?

No. The camera is just one way. You can equally import a photo from your library, a PDF from Files or Mail, or an e-invoice — drag & drop on the Mac too. And for the backlog: import the whole stack at once and Quitto recognises and sorts it one by one.

16

Are there widgets and a Lock Screen scan?

Yes. A widget shows the month's income, expenses and profit right on your Home Screen. A second widget — also on the Lock Screen — opens the camera with one tap: receipt in hand, photo, done, without opening the app first.

17

Can I find an old receipt again?

Yes. Quitto searches the recognised text of every receipt — type "train", an amount or a vendor name and the receipt is right there. Exactly what a shoebox or mail inbox never lets you do.

18

Does Quitto fit into the Apple workflow?

Yes. Via the share sheet you send a photo or PDF from Mail, Safari or Files straight to Quitto — it becomes a receipt. With Shortcuts you can add an entry, fetch the monthly figure or automate the export. All optional, none of it required.

19

How long does setup take?

There is none. No account, no sign-up, no chart of accounts, no bank login. Open the app, capture the first receipt — done. No 47-step setup like the big bookkeeping tools.

20

What if the recognition is occasionally wrong?

Quitto shows the receipt and the recognised fields side by side. Tap a field and the matching area on the receipt is highlighted — you confirm or correct in two or three taps instead of retyping everything. You can also create any entry fully by hand.

21

Can I back up my data and take it with me?

Yes. Quitto exports a complete, password-encrypted backup — all receipts and data in one file. You store it wherever you want and restore it on any device. Your data belongs to you, not us.

22

Which languages is Quitto available in?

The app comes in six languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. The tax logic (EÜR, DATEV, Anlage-EÜR) is built for Germany.

23

Is Quitto an alternative to sevDesk or Lexoffice?

For most solo self-employed people: yes — the affordable, lean alternative. Quitto costs a fraction and does exactly what you need for the EÜR: capture receipts, sort them, export for your tax advisor. But deliberately no invoicing, no bank connection, no complicated bookkeeping. If you need full double-entry bookkeeping, sevDesk is the better fit.

24

Do I need an account? Does it work offline?

No account, no sign-up, no email. You open the app and photograph the first receipt. Everything happens on your device — Quitto needs no internet connection to work.

25

Where do my receipts stay?

On your device. Quitto runs no servers of its own. If you turn on sync, your data runs encrypted through your own iCloud between iPhone, iPad and Mac — never through us. The only internet access is a public exchange-rate service of the European Central Bank, if you record a receipt in a foreign currency — with no data of yours transmitted.
